A stranger walks a long and ugly road
And its filled with hairspray and smiles
He babbles to himself about a road paved in gold
He believes hes found the pinnacle of man
And he says oh what have I done
To be such a useless man
He cries oh what have I done
To be such a worthless man
Well a child passes by holdin her mommas hand
She looks upon this stranger and says momma who's that man
Momma says baby, it's not polite to stare
Well the child looks behind over her right shoulder
Sees our hero stumble, watches as he falls over
Momma says, baby, just pretend that he's not there
The days carry over, the memories melt away
And another child learns a worthless lesson today
Well our hero sits alone in an alley by the stairs
And this child she has grown, but never learned how to care
And 2 paths, they would cross again, fate has played its card
See the child ran away from home but she was not yet fully grown
She had no money so she found herself alone
In an alley, by the stairs
The days carry over, the memories melt away
Another mother learns a worthless lesson today
Well on desolation row, all you need is empathy
When there's nothing left to hold, we embrace one another's tragedy
From there, ups the only way to go
And this child she remembered lookin over her shoulder
Now she realized she should have helped and not grown colder
Its such a different story, when you're the one who's down
The days carry over, the memories melt away
Another human learns meaningful message today
